The other two books simply have fewer nice character moments - though as proven in the extended editions, there certainly are a number, and they certainly make for good scenes. But there are more dramatic battle scenes that one is obliged to make a big fuss of, in today's moviemaking.

All the same, I do think they could've done better - and yes, the Paths of the Dead is one obvious example.
