I wonder whether they really think the ending is stronger without the epilogue, or if they just realize what a popular scene that is, and know that leaving it out will sell DVDs.

The producers/director have made such a big deal in interviews about the emotional and thematic importance of the epilogue to the movie that it sounds a bit strange it's now gone from the theatrical cut.
The movie has premiered, we should know the final word on this soon enough.
