Whatever Joffrey does is irrelevant (and for all the "I based it on the Wars of the Roses" talk, juvenile kings of that era were entirely pawns of whomever managed to get themselves appointed regent, usually mothers like Cersei).
Except Joffrey went against Cersei by having Ned executed.
The Lannisters CANNOT allow Ned to live knowing what he knows, both because they can't afford it to become common knowledge...
The rest of the series shows just how little this actually mattered.
and because Ned would've spent whatever life would have remained him seeking vengeance at any cost.
I doubt it. He was being sent to the Wall. And it's made quite clear that once you are at the Wall, you are at the Wall and done with the rest of Westeros - see Aemon Targaryen.
It was a good deal for all involved. Joffrey breaking it plunged a good portion of Westeros into civil war.
interesting thread over on tv guide...cannoli will hate it.

He was going to put aside his principles and say, 'I betrayed my country and my king and my people'.

Even if I concede he was dead from the moment he was captured, that leaves HOW he died to determine.

Ned is a northerner, and well aware of the good he could have done on the Wall.

That was not the clincher though. What good he could do on the Wall is nothing next to a usurper

Look up the concept of hostages sometime. Plus, Varys was playing Ned.

So what should have Ned done, once he was in that cell? *NM*

Stick to his guns and not agree to take the Black or recant his actions against Joffrey

I'd pick family over honour.

Cersie is the one who says "love is poison" in the second book to Sansa.
