I know I am the guy who'd watch anything before reading it, mostly because that's quicker and more likely to happen anyway. But in this case you may even reach the end of the series faster that way, who knows?
The masses of characters can be a bit overwhelming but as F&R said, the love that went into the choosing of the actors, the production design etc. makes it unmissable, in my opinion.
The only problem I see with the show is, that it will take a few seasons to reach the redeeming moments for all the shit that's happening early on.
