And I have read a couple of reviews which have commented on this and the fact that certain parts of the film feel rushed. They also echoed your review saying that they would have preferred if more time was spent on the early interaction between Xavier and Eric.

I won't get to see it until next week but am looking forward to it even if I don't have massive expectations.
