This is the unfortunate result of the new DVD-release schedule newyorkersedai Send a noteboard - 28/05/2011 07:46:37 PM
It may have started with shows like the new BSG, where the original run was 13 eps (half a season, by US standards). When that gets a strong dvd sale and the producers come to a reasonable stopping point or find themselves hindered by a strike, they decide to sell what's left as a half-season.

The price is reduced - $24 US MSRP versus $48. If the sales do well, everyone is convinced there's a new revenue source to be found in the break. No longer do you have a whole season to sell on dvd, you can sell off fractions of one, and tie it to the production schedule. Truly, truly evil.

The fact that networks like USA now run 16-ep seasons of Psych, Royal Pains, and White Collar, is a support. Unfortunately, I think the consumer is the biggest loser here. It's possible that tv-watchers are getting more shows because of these changes. However, cable still sticks to that annoying concepts of "Sweeps." Thusly, we all lose.

The "sweeps" idea means that every networks competes with each other on more or less the same footing. Sun Tzu and the book of the 9 rings say to go against your opponents' rhythm. Here, the US network system has 4-5 adversaries who compete directly.

The aftermath is a great big dead period. Somehow, people in the States have drawn attention by airing new shows in the off period. Why don't all networks have some of their biggest shows going on throughout the year? Why isn't there at least one really good comedy and drama occurring on popular tv during all 4 seasons?

My suspicion is that the foreign market is behaving differently to the one I know really well. My suspicion is that they feel there's such a strong link between that Torchwood show and Dr. Who that they can simply place the two close together. Then, the frustrated fans of the latter will simply watch the former. One will have a break that overlaps with the other. And seldom will fans get everything they deserve - at least in part because the fan probably wants too much.

But what the hell am I saying? I neither know foreign tv too well, nor have watched more than 2 eps of Dr. Who. I don't even know which ones would turn me on to it...
