For a show called "Castle" the focus has been entirely too much on Beckett so much so that people are forgetting you can still have a show called Castle without her.
I imagine most people are well aware of that, they just like the show as it is - it isn't supposed to be a ground breaking show that only a few dozen people care about, it is a light hearted bit of fun based around Castle's interactions with the cops and his family that isn't taxing.
Anyway, with the suspense disposed of, why the hell was Castle a pallbearer?
You mean along with the three cops Castle works with and that Montgomery is closest to, owns the bar they hang out in after work, is extremely generous towards the force and has "handed over" Beckett (his protege who he feels duty bound to look after for his part in her mother's death) to?
I'm not saying this episode was not entertaining in the manner typical of Castle, but let's not get overboard about a couple of pieces of stunt-writing.
Ever get the feeling you miss the point... or that you work too hard to make sure you do?

Ok, Castle was awesome. (no spoilers in my post, but the responses are dirty with 'em!)

Why is everyone assuming a death? Did I miss something beyond the contrived ending?

To me, this seems eerily similar to Season of 3 of Bones, penultimate episode. (xpoiler for Bones)
