Bit predictable and cheesy at times though.
Shame they couldn't have been more subtle with Montgomery's hold out gun - I was basically waiting for him to use it from the moment he got shot.
I was half expecting an attempt on Beckett at the end as well - big bad guy was out to get her, Montgomery took out his first attempt so it kinda made sense there would be another one when she was in a really exposed public place and it both leaves a nice cliff hanger to end the season on and puts her out of action until the next season starts. (I'm assuming she turned to Castle and hence just got injured rather than killed... and didn't hear him say he loved her)
Getting rid of Montgomery and having her getting over being shot is a good way to freshen up the show while making the least changes to the formula.

Ok, Castle was awesome. (no spoilers in my post, but the responses are dirty with 'em!)

Why is everyone assuming a death? Did I miss something beyond the contrived ending?

To me, this seems eerily similar to Season of 3 of Bones, penultimate episode. (xpoiler for Bones)
