We're talking Marvel "mythology" here, not actual honest-to-Frigga Norse Mythology. As Tim pointed out, the basic idea is "what if those guys we thought were gods were just not from around here?" But then Marvel also has nearly fifty years of back-story and development that they've put into Thor, and that's what you were seeing here.

Now, all that said - I can't lie and say it didn't bug me when Odin lost his eye in battle with the Frost Giants. Everyone knows that he actually put his eye in Mimir's well in exchange for wisdom and knowledge. :rolleyes:
