I haven't read them in years, so I don't know how accurate he is, but I love his show character. He feels right to me, and much less jerky than he could be.
Especially the scene in episode 2 when he slaps Joffrey. You can tell he knows the routines and duties of being a wealthy son of a Lord and representing his house no matter his size.
Of course, I am not really sure he was ever portrayed that clever in the books until after he returns to King's Landing. I remember him being a bit snide and cocky in the books as well at first until his character was developed.
But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
