It keeps trying to build upon name recognition and it is failing miserably.
SGU was NOT an SG show. The camp was part of the show and neither one took itself to seriously. SGU had very little to do with either one.
It seems more like someone had a cool idea for a show and SuckFest said, "Ok, we will make it part of this franchise. That way we will already have an audience to start out with." This was half of my problem with it. The other half was, after one season we still knew jack shit about the ship, but we knew whose wife was fucking which colonel on Earth. There was one mildly entertaining episode in the first ten, but other than that I felt I was watching Brothers and Sisters in Space. I remember being super excited for SGU, then after episode 5, thinking where was Stargate?
Caprica was another show that should have been better but was weighted down by being attached to another show. I think Caprica would have been much better had they not made it apart of the BSG universe and left it it's own entity.
Basically, I think people turned away from both series because, with the name and the attachment to an existing franchise, there were expectations that weren't met.

Castle: This is so weird. I dressed up as him for Halloween.
Beckett: Me too.

I agree that it wasn't really the usual campy SG show, but that's why I liked it... *NM*
