After strong premiere ratings, HBO has renewed GAME OF THRONES for a second season.
The second season will begin filming in the summer, probably to air in early 2012. It will be based on the second novel in the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series, A CLASH OF KINGS, though the series title will remain GAME OF THRONES for branding purposes. HBO have not commented on how many episodes Season 2 will have; there has been speculation that the producers will want 11 or 12 to fit the slightly greater length of Book 2 into the story.
Book 2 obviously introduces a number of new characters to the story: from major players like Stannis, Melisandre, Davos, Brienne, Ygritte and Mace Tyrell to fan-favourites like Dolorous Edd, and Jaqen H'Ghar. Who they cast in these roles will be interesting to see.

One would hope this is going to push Martin to finish the next two books faster than the present one
