I've never been in a book club. It sounded appropriately silly and pithy to me.

To be honest, the "book club" statement by the nyt writer was so specific, it could've been anything: e.g., I've never eaten kettle corn while watching a movie; I've never played with a dog while listening to NPR; I've never known a domesticated animal named "bela" with one "l."

As always, if you have to explain the joke...

Then it wasn't a very good joke in the first place. :P
