I had this same problem, though the 'high volume during commercials' issue ticks me off more than anything.
I started watching shows on Hulu and noticed the volume of the commercials throughout the show is actually much lower than the actual show volume.
If I walk away from the computer during a commercial, I know when my show comes back on because the volume goes up!
