twofold, going in part from old memories: for one, he gets a ring that basically turns him into his own genie, but with no bottle. Need a corkscrew, a hammer, a fire hydrant? Zap, ring does it. Also, you can fly and have a universal translator on your finger.
The second part is sort of propulsive and juicy, like the best books, movies, or dates: The guy finds a dying alien who gives him a ring with incredible power. From then on, he's a member of, basically, a galaxy-wide interpol. Pretty sweet, tho I never thought it would be converted to a movie...
