PAUL is the new movie starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The two play English nerds (new territory for them... ) who travel to the States to go to Comic-con and visit famous places relating to UFO's and Aliens. Along the way, they meet Paul, an actual alien, and help him escape Men In Black and meet his ship to go home.
They story, while not really new, is well done and never feels like it slacks off. The humor, while sometimes crude and sometimes nerdy, is a near constant through out the movie.
Paul is a CGI characters, a la Gollum, voiced by Seth Rogen. After watching the movie, I don't think anyone else could have made Paul the likeable character he is.
Jason Batemen plays Agent Zoyle, the Man In Black who everyone is running from. I was pleased to see that Bateman was able bring the badassitude necessary to pull off the bad guy role. He also has quite a few pop culture references in his lines.
There are a ton of cameos in the film, from Jane Lynch (Sue on Glee) to Sigourney Weaver along with several others I couldn't quite place.
The humor is such that you don't need to be pop culturally based to get, but it does add a little extra something there. My girlfriend loved the movie, but didn't get most of the references.
There are some people who were extremely annoying and should have been casted better. For Instance, Jon Le Truglio (the guy who ran over Jonah Hill in Superbad) was extremely annoying to me as a 'typical' Hollywood-nerd-who-barely-functions-in-the-real-world. There is also the guy who was in Anchorman as one of the main four and Get Smart, but thankfully his screen time is short.
A very enjoyable comedy with a couple of odd casting choices, lots of crude humor, and definitely not suitable for younger kids.
I give it 4 out of 5 pop culture references.

Castle: This is so weird. I dressed up as him for Halloween.
Beckett: Me too.

I enjoyed it and laughed a lot, but I went in with very low expectations based on critic reviews. *NM*
