Season 1 is the worst- wayyyy too many "oh man nerds amirite" jokes.
Or that oft-quoted Sheldon line, "Yes, well, I’m polymerized tree sap and you’re an inorganic adhesive, so whatever verbal projectile you launch in my direction is reflected off of me, returns to its original trajectory and adheres to you."
ANYONE WHO CAN SAY THAT WOULD KNOW THE ORIGINAL LINE.
The best jokes, I think, are when we're laughing with the gang, not at them. So it's incredibly lame to see Leonard try to fit in at a football party. It's incredibly hilarious to see the group play increasingly weird practical jokes on each other.
My other complaint is that it tended (not so much in this season) to rely way too much on a reset button. Or rather, there was very little continuity. Something would happen in one episode (Leonard and Penny would almost sleep together is a big one, but there's lots of little things), and then it would never be mentioned again.
Also, I hate Wolowitz. Creepy little guy, and not in the funny sitcom way.
And Leonard is way too often the straight man, which usually means he ends up acting like kind of an ass to his friends (generally via sarcastic comments)
...that said, it does have a ton of great lines. It also seems to be unusually in tune with nerd culture. And of course Sheldon and Penny have great chemistry. And Raj is a pretty great character. And it brought us Evil Wil Wheaton.
Sigh, I just wish it didn't dip so often into typical sitcommy-ness. I bet if BBT was filmed more like modern comedies instead of the out of fashion 3-camera style, it'd be even better.
Man, I bitch a lot about a show I profess to love, don't I?

Castle: This is so weird. I dressed up as him for Halloween.
Beckett: Me too.

One of my favorite shows. Definitely my favorite sitcom. HIMYM is pretty good, too. *NM*

I concur about the canned laughter.

And expecting you to laugh with them. Too pushy. Too manipulative.

I am okay with awkward silence. If laugh tracks are the alternative.
