Yes, I do have the HD channels, and, yes, I'm sure I was on the HD channel. I'm sure that my TV is an HDTV also. It's an LG 37LD450- 37 inch High Definition 1080p LCD TV.
Most important question is, is the picture filling the entire screen? No "black bars" on the sides or top and bottom during normal programming (during commercials is OK- commercials are often filmed in standard definition, and don't always fill up an HD screen)?
Yes, the picture is filling the whole screen.
If no, I'll go into that with you, but I'll assume yes.
So, the best way to see HD, is to watch a football game. Honestly. There are so many different camera angles, with tons of little details (like helmet decals, the crowd, the texture of the grass) you can only really see in HD.
I never had a problem with the football games before. Before I got the TV I have now (and the one I broke last year-that was expensive to replace!) I was watching on a 25" CRT TV and across the room I could see the details that mattered just fine. Of course now that I watch TV on my larger LCD TV it's MUCH harder to see a 25" TV from across the room. I think that's mainly the fact that the TV is almost as old as my youngest sister (20) and it's a greater distance than before. That's at my parent's house BTW.
Turn to a football game, and see if it looks HD. Do you have a standard def TV in another room you could use for comparison? Sometimes the difference is hard to see by itself, but incredibly obvious in side-by-side.
If the picture fills the screen, but it's still showing standard def, I'd suggest calling your cable company, actually. You're definitely not the only one to have problems like this, and it's likely an easy fix. Sometimes it's just changing a setting on the TV, sometimes a setting on the cable box (you do have a cable box, correct?).
I do have a cable box. The settings are as follows:
Picture Size: Stretch
Aspect Ratio:16x9
Output Resolution: 1080i
Kirk: Spock, you want to know something? Everybody’s human.
Spock: I find that remark…insulting.
Spock: I find that remark…insulting.
HD. What's the deal?

If the picture isn't filling the screen, then it's not HD

I can see the wrinkles and nose hairs much more clearly. I am not necessarily keen on HD. TMI. *NM*
