Citizen Kane
This is a great film but I feel suffers from it's reputation as the best film of all time. The first time when I saw it I was somewhat underwhelmed, but when I saw it for the second time I really loved it since the expectation was gone.
I don't have much expectation, honestly, so I think I'd be ok. That said, I didn't like The Pride of the Yankees very much, and that is apparently a real fave too.
Well it is a very different film from Pride of the Yankees
Lawrence of Arabia
A truly magnificent looking film with an absolutely gorgeous Peter O'Toole. It is a long film which doesn't feel the need to hurry it's pace but it is something which you should put some time by to watch.
Hot guys? I'm in.
In the words of Noel Coward to Peter O'Toole "If you'd been any prettier, it would have been Florence of Arabia."
Singin' in the Rain
Sacrilege Darling! This is the Golden Age MGM musical. I'm now humming several of it's best pieces in my head. Most of the songs used in this film had already featured in other MGM musicals. It also contains by far the greatest song and dance number in movie musical history.
Fun fact: at several points were Debbie Reynolds character is meant to be dubbing Jean Hagen's character, Jean Hagen is actually dubbing Debbie Reynolds.
Not so fun fact: Gene Kelly was so horrible and demanding to Debbie Reynolds about her dancing that she regularly broke down in tears. Once when Reynolds once when crying beneath a piano Fred Astaire found her and on finding out what was wrong helped her work on her dancing.
Hm. I love fun facts. I can see you feel strongly about this, so you can have the satisfaction in knowing that I have been guilted into watching this sooner than later.
The Maltese Falcon
There is nothing I love more than watching Film Noir and Bogey films late at night beside a glowing fire, with a glass of red wine in one hand, as I eat all the strawberry sweets out of the Quality Street tin with the other. It's a Christmas tradition for me. I highly recommend it.
I <3 Christmas traditions. I'm all about this now. I better wait until I have access to the fireplace.
Add in the likes of Casablanca (my personal favourite for this tradition) and The Big Sleep for the perfect tone
