You can't go wrong with the traditional Romero films and Shaun of the Dead is one of the best/funniest movies out there.
But a few lesser known movies that you may find interesting are:
Pontypool- This movie is set almost entirely in a church basement/AM radio studio. The jist is that the "virus" is spread by certain words or more to the point, understanding certain words. The hero is a radio disc jockey and while you rarely see the zombies at all, this film is very intense and totally worthwhile.
Dead Snow- Best nazi zombie movie ever made. Swedish horror at it finest/bloodiest.
Dead Girl- Very disturbing movie about teenage punks who find a naked and restrained girl in an abandoned insane asylum. Turns out, she is a zombie. They decide to "keep" her and do all sorts of unspeakable things to her. It is safe to say that by the end of the movie the zombie isn't the worst monster in the film.

I actually like how running zombies raise the level of threat *NM*

Yes, Shaun of the Dead showed how ridiculously unthreatening slow and stupid can be. *NM*

The second one rewrites the first movie into the first half hour with two people instead of a group.
