Yay, proper TV is coming back! And one of the first fall shows hitting screens this year is FOX newbie Glee, a quirky kinda show about the adventures and travails of a high school's Glee club. Now, not being American I have no idea what that means, but it's essentially a school choir except with decent music.
The first two episodes have been pretty darn spectacular with comedy so dirty it's black mixing with some outstanding vocal performances. In short, this isn't your everyday High School Musical folks. The cast are predominantly from Broadway, although Heroes fans will recognise a few familiar faces. Particularly the adorable Jayma Mays and the not-so-adorable Jessalyn Gilsig as the two female prongs of a love triangle with the Glee club coach. And there's also Jane Lynch, who blesses the show with a brilliant sense of comic timing.
But the most important thing here is the songs, and they've done some pretty awesome songs. In two episodes we've covered Journey's "Don't Stop Believing", Kanye West's "Golddigger", Salt N Pepa's "Push It" and Amy Winehouse's "Rehab". Future episodes will feature the likes of Queen and the Rolling Stones, offering something for every musical taste. At the moment the songs do admittedly sound a little overproduced, but that should hopefully be fixable.
It's not perfect, for sure. Some of the glee club kids are still essentially window dressing and plotlines seem to run faster than characterisation should allow, but when people are tossing out jokes about gag reflexes, bulimia and the like, it's well worth watching. And as a special bonus with this post
