You just need to enjoy it for what it is, a really good version of the old 1970s Japanese films done with a bit of humour.
Maybe the fact that I haven't seen any old 1970s Japanese films plays a role in my lack of appreciation for Zatoichi, then. Unless you count the Woman in the Sand one (or whatever the name is), which is a totally different genre anyway.
Ah, I wasn't sure how much the dialects would make it difficult. With the subtitling, it does seem to be more and more common for it to be done when I'm really not sure there is a real need - I can't remember what it was on but I was over at a friend's house a few weeks ago after a night out and the best thing on TV was some american reality TV type show, there was a woman who spoke really clear english with a slight Japanese accent and they felt the need to provide subtitles. Which was quite funny
Yeah, exactly. Though as of this week, our public channels are going to offer the choice between subtitles or not, apparently - I'm not sure how that works, but it sounds good. We also have a legendary sketch on the topic, with a guy with a heavy Western-Flemish accent complaining about how West-Flemings are always subtitled - and of course he too is subtitled. Then he comes back, this time to complain about how he was made to look like a fool by having his rant against subtitling subtitled. It's hilarious, but fairly untranslatable obviously, as you need to understand both the speech and the original subtitles to get it.
I guess over all the key factors are probably the same - the American films have the biggest budgets and the biggest names, as well as the most aggresive promotion, so it outweighs over factors.
Indeed. And there's just that many more of them being made. The Flemish market isn't big enough to make many movies for, even if some of those movies then have some limited success abroad, dubbed or with subtitles.
I guess Amelie isn't as popular as they hoped
Heh, yeah.
I'll take that as meant in a good way
It was.
My grasp of foreign languages is pretty shocking, though it is from it being something I just have no ability with despite trying rather than not caring.
*nods* Fair enough, you certainly seem to go out of your way to see good foreign movies, judging by how many you've seen...

As for my quibbles with the list...

Since it's "World Cinema," does that automatically exclude U.S. films? *NM*

Not only that, it also seems to exclude British, Australian and other English-language ones.

No one minds Australia's exclusion. All they make is bad Jackie Chan films. *NM*

In fairness, Roberto Benigni being an overrated ass doesn't mean his only good film isn't good.
