I'm actually reconsidering that Vampire Diaries is superior to Buffy. It's different. Basically, it's closer to Buffy than any other show. Buffy was something special.
I originally thought that vampire diaries would be a "guilty pleasure" type show, but I was wrong! It's no guilt and all pleasure. Vampire Diaries is fantastic television, it's a lot better than I thought it would be and the season picks up speed fast. I'm a die hard Buffy fan, and I never thought I'd say this, but Vampire Diaries is as good or better than Buffy. It has everything that made Buffy fantastic, but with tighter plotting and faster pacing.
Witty dialogue, humor, and pop culture references? check.
Adventure/scary stuff/suspense? check.
Romance/relationships/angst? check. Although nobody does angst (ANGST!) like Buffy! So buffy probably wins on the emotional score. vampire diaries has never made me cry. Then again, Buffy's first season also didn't evoke any tears from me so maybe it takes time.
Great acting by ridiculously beautiful people? Check, check and check!
I've actually given this a lot of thought and the only way in which Buffy is clearly superior is that it's a more overtly feminist show. Buffy will still always hold a special place in my heart but it really says something that I'm even comparing another show to Buffy.
