It was a 2-season long tv show that I quite enjoyed.
Other than the obvious entries here, such as the film just released on DVD, The Road, I Am Legend, and The Day After Tomorrow, I'll mention some more obscure ones...
There is an obscure 80's miniseries called "The Day After" that is available on Netflix I believe that is about the US post nuclear attack.
There is a 70's movie called "A Boy and His Dog."
I'm actually a huge reader of post apocalyptic lit --
The absolute must read is "Lucifer's Hammer", a post apocalyptic novel from the 70s that is still at the top of the list. Since you mention doing reading in this genre, it's likely you've already read this, along with the recent ripoff "One Second After" which, instead of of comet hitting the Earth focuses on an EMP attack, but has similar plotlines.
I am just finishing up the anthology of post apocalyptic short stories called "Wastelands." This anthology is rare and obscure, and likely you haven't read it yet.
