When I first saw the previews for Modern Family I thought it looked humorous but I was busy with school and didn't really want to start a new show so I passed on it. It wasn't long after that that I had a friend slam the show as "not really that funny" so I decided to definitely pass. What a mistake!
The show is a kind of "mocumentary" about the modern family and follows the family of patriarch Jay Pritchett (Ed Bundy!) and the families of his children Claire and Mitchell. Claire is married to Phil "the cool dad" and is a stay at home mom of three children including one cute and popular teen daughter, a brainy pre-teen, and a young son whose best skill seems to be an inability to focus on anything. Mitchell is a lawyer who lives with his partner Cameron. In the beginning episode they have returned to the Los Angeles area where they all live with an adopted baby, Lily. To add to the humor of the ensuing family dynamics, Jay has married a much younger Colombian woman named Gloria (played by Sofia Vergara) who has a pre-teen son who is part brainy nerd and part horny adolescent.
Each half hour show typically centers around a theme that each member of the family is shown discussing or commenting on to some extent in the beginning of the episode. In addition these little commentaries/interviews are interspersed throughout the show. They often are funny in themselves and just add to the feeling of getting to know the inner workings of the families. Overall the format works good and adds to the flow of the show. The different topics typically center around those oh-so-funny moments that pop up in families like the bitter, ex-wife, the teenage daughter's boyfriend, the exchanging of anniversary gifts, the throwing of birthday parties, and much more.
Simply put, this show is hilarious! I have managed to catch up on 21 episodes in two days. I have honestly not laughed aloud like this at a television show in a long, long time. I would recommend this show to anyone; its humor is pretty clean and never really gets too risque. It is definitely an A+ in my book. So, check it out if you get a chance.
I believe you can watch episodes on ABC and Hulu although there are only a few at each site. Still, you don't really need too watch straight from Episode 1 to get the gist of the relationships or the show plot so go ahead and watch a random one or two if you want. Nothing will be spoiled by skipping around a bit.
