The sign showed a man seated before a hearth, and he had been assured that this was indeed the Glowing Embers inn, the only one in the small village of Sarel in eastern Amadicia.
It was close to nightfall, and the common room was packed. A good number of them were soldiers, and they did not wear the impeccable white cloaks of the Children of the Light, but blue cloaks with the Star and Thistle of Amadicia. Armsmen of the king, likely on patrol to remind the Children that Amadicia indeed had a king, lest they forget. The stranger did not think the soldiers would be very successful in this endeavour.
Most of the people inside were simple common folk, however. The winter had been a long one, though nowhere near as bad as the previous, and people were still exchanging stories from what happened last fall, in the west. That was worrying talk, but a far closer, and therefore greater, threat was that man in Ghealdan claiming to be the prophet of the Dragon Reborn. The border with Ghealdan was not too far north from Sarel that the people wouldn't be worried.
The open door was letting a cold wind in, and the patrons looked at the newcomer with irritation, and irritation that soon turned into amazement when they noticed the patchwork cloak that hung about the man's shoulders. The inn had some musicians, but nothing that could rival the works of a gleeman. Shaking his cloak to dust if off, and to attract further attention to it, the traveler stepped in, shutting the door behind him. At the other end of the common room, one of the Amadician soldiers looked up. The lamp behind him cast his face into shadow, but it was quite clear he did not have the same expression as most of those around.
Before the innkeeper, a stolid man called Master Jaemin could even invite the gleeman inside his inn, the soldier stood up and intercepted him. Now, the newcomer could see that this one was an officer in the king's army. "You are hard to miss, Master Vatrek. I am bannerman Sevran, in the King's service. But my Friends call me Delat. If you come with me, a room has already been prepared for you. You and your friends were expected."
The patrons of the inn start whispering to each other, but after assurances that the gleeman will indeed return to perform for them this evening, the commoners calm down, and the two men exit the common area for a private dining room on the second floor.
Two other people were already waiting there. A young Illianer woman, of apparently common birth and modest upbringing, sat across the table from a large man, unwashed and unshaved, still wearing some dirty, worn and even bloody clothing the colours of which could only indicate Tuatha'an origins, and with a monstrous axe hanging at his belt. The two turned to look at their host when he came in with the traveler, and shutting the door behind him, Delat announced "We are all here now."
