Yes, that's the only reasonable explanation, I decided. I was humble enough to realise that nobody would be carving statues of me, so it came to reason that the only reason that this looked like me was that I was the only one here. Some wooden creature had been drowning, and seeing me upon the shore, had hoped that by making itself identifiable to me I would be more inclined to help it.

It was simple enough to prove, all I had to do was move one of its limbs and...

... well, it was still remarkably stiff. And heavy.

I didn't know much about the physiology of... whatever the wooden creature was. Was it simply unconscious, or was it dying? It didn't appear to be breathing, I couldn't hear a heartbeat, it looked for all the world like a simple wooden carving.

I should try to wake it up. But how?

Slap it a few times?
Bring fire close to it?
Pinch myself?
Something else?
