I say almost, as Isaac has not confirmed he is on the list, but he was the first to point out the Macbeth connection. (At first I was worried about both Isaac and FT having figured out the setting so fast and that they are so certain about it (as in "could either be Macbeth?" ), but then I realized that giving Google any of the seven names plus the word Thane would likely give this theme.) So: what's the next step?
I'm actually not on the list FT made, which is all the Thanes listed, but I'm a MacBeth character who would be appropriate at the venue, I'd rather not be more specific on that score. Anyway I'd caution everyone avoid locking in too much on the Mod's Thane remark at the beginning and remember that ? probably did not generate a complete game and concept after we locked in at 7 players so an All-thane cast is hardly a defualt we should assume from a quick bit of flavor. Calling together all one's thanes would, for instance, not prevent Malcom or Donalbain, the king's sons from being present, nor Lady MacBeth or Lady MacDuff, who might arrive with her husband, or Banquo or Siward or Seyton... and one could stretch a point to a lot of others. e.g. 'Talking to this crowd of nobles, my loyal thanes' would easily stretch to 'oh yeah, and you wives, and my sons the princes, oh and our victorious general Banquo, oh and the half dozen servants standing around'. I don't want to delve into that in detail because anything I'd say would out me. I'm not overly concerned about being outed but I'd rather not go there yet. I am comfortable in saying that my reveal would be met with 'oh, yeah, sure, he/she would be there' but for now I'd prefer an equal amount of uncertainty to everyone else. You can all be one of FT's seven listed Thanes, I could be from a relatively equal sized pool.
That of course is assuming everyone is a thane on that list, which I doubt. It was the safe lie if pressed, so to speak, or might seem to be. But there's really no reason to think ? designed the game around a lucky coincidence of seven thanes and seven players. We could easily have the bad 'guys' be non-thanes, one, both, or however many, and for that matter we might have spooked a townie who isn't a thane into lying, especially since someone less familiar with the play and the general background might not have been able to spin together why they should be there. e.g. our doc might be the unnamed doctor who attends Lady MacBeth and understandably leery of a NK, for instance. OR one of the three mysterious informants who are listed as disappearing, not being dead, and one could easily be the cop. For that matter FT never actually said he was a thane and I wouldn't put it past him to set up such a trap, hoping to snare a scummer if town or a role if scum. Good odds really, one could expect our number to include some of those thanes and them to cheerfully confirm it rapidly, and for townies who weren't to hesitate to say so, confronting non-thane scummers, if that's the score, with a solid wall of 'I, Thane'. If everoyne did confirm it hunting out MacBeth, the de facto bad guy, or a liar, would be very good odds, the same would apply if he were actually a thane too, I just noted his wording was ambiguous on that score, According to the wiki though, there were seven thanes in the play, and there are seven of us. ... If I read this right we should be Macbeth, Macduff, Ross, Lenox, Angus, Mentheith and Caithness, correct?.
Can we take a vote on releasing the names? What are the consequences? We will not have ppl trying to give a different name, as this is easily found out. One problem could be that we assume that the story has anything to say about the Town/Scum, which makes both Macbeth and Macduff the primary targets for both the Day and Night Kills.
Well, you'd want to do a simultaneous reveal, preferably by coding. It gives us our best chance to find a faker if we have one. No one in their right mind is going to claim MacBeth right now, especially with me leaving an empty slot as a certainty, not too mention leaving myself wide open for accusations of being MacBeth if everyone else does reveal as a Thane. I'd want it as simultaneous to gives us the optimum chance of a double up. Personally I think ? just picked names from the play, it's a short list and thanes are a big chunk of them, and that had we had 8 or 9 players this wouldn't even be brought up, I genuinely doubt I'm the odd man/woman out but I could be, I don't really see myself as inappropriate to the gathering. If we do a simultaneous reveal though we've got a good chance at double MacDuff or Lenox or whatever.
Furthermore I would like to know if others had more flavor than either Isaac or me.
Agreed
So far, as we have nothing else, there is not much to discuss I think. So, let me know what you think about my suggestions, and please feel free to suggest tactics yourself.
Well, I'm not sure name reveal is quite warranted yet, this Thane scenario could bag us someone but frankly it could be a townie, I was certainly tempted to lie about it, but I'm pretty sure I'd have said as much town or scum, I'm a good BSer and maneuverer. Our de facto gruesome twosome would be Lord and Lady MacBeth but that might be a little too obvious. There also wasn't any conspiracy to kill Duncan to have uncovered. So we're pre-play really and shouldn't take much for granted. Our bad guys could be thanes and able to answer quite honestly as much without fear. I mean, if you pulled Lennox as a scummer, sigh of relief and all, might as well be honest. Same, let's not forget MacBeth was Thane of Glamis and Cawdor, and he got Cawdor right before the murder, because Cawdor was a traitor who had just been executed. e.g. one of our bad guys could be the Thane of Cawdor. It was the witches reveal of MacBeth as Cawdor's thane, before he was told of it, that certified them as prophetic after all and got him pondering regicide.
So, some food for thought, and I'd support a name reveal but only if it was simultaneous and coded. I'd also want to consider a semi-amnesty for anyone who might be lying about the Thane thing themselves... decreases my odds of being lynched or NK'd as odd-man-out, though I'd rather anyone who was going to do so do so after everyone is locked in for name reveal.
