Well, I can shed a bit of light on them and why I selected them Isaac Send a noteboard - 22/06/2011 11:56:05 PM
Well, I know of the Untouchables and I watched 40 minutes of Blade Runner once. So thus my votes.

Obviously the major reason was I knew all these series/games/history decently well, that they weren't obscure, and that I felt they all fit to mafia/mystery template.

I kinda wanted to pick themes I figured had a good chance of being 'well-known' to the kinda crowd we have here and across RAFO, and to spread out the genre options, most have murder-mystery as a strong component except the Untouchables which is just flat out mafia. Untouchables obviously isn't a book series or anything but I figured most everyone would know of them, at least amongst our American players, alternatively 40k and Revelation Space are of UK origin and more popular over there.

Blade Runner's an 80's cult classic that revolves around a detective, and is usually considered on of the main inspirations of Cyberpunk kinda of tied with some others for second after William Gibson's Sprawl Trilogy.

Dresden files had a 1 season TV show you can watch on Hulu and is modern fantasy/mystery, so another touch-base with a mystery-flavored setup... I actually figured it would be the default pick #1. The Alex Cross stuff isn't even a little bit sci-fi or fantasy but it's one of the best-selling murder-mystery series, and like Untouchables it was offered to see if non-SF/F gathered interest. Revelation Space is a very hard sci-fi series, with a strong touch of horror like Alien or I am Legend (book not movies) and was picked in large part because it gave a flavor excuse to have people confined together, stuck on a ship and all. 40k was mostly picked because I've seen a lot of references to it over the years on RAFO/WoTmania and it struck me as maybe having some recruiting power, it's also raw super-cheesy Space Opera and struck me as probably the best known of that sort that didn't have 'Star' in it's name (Trek, Wars, Gate) or wasn't a retired classic like Foundation, Lensmen, etc. That's pretty much the long and short of it.

I guess we can exclude Cross and Revelation Space, no interest thus far... so Dresden, 40k, Untouchables, or Blade Runner for our Final Four :P
