I'm entirely open to the idea that WF isn't a SK, but if anything, his Watcher claim set off alarm bells in my head because it was such a 'safe claim'. Why are you surprised no one has counter-claimed?
I never claimed I was surprised that nobody had counter-claimed, I said that the fact that nobody counterclaimed incites me to believe it.
That amounts to the same thing, if I claimed cop and nobody counter-claimed, that would be considered a pretty viable claim, if I claimed lie detector it wouldn't be, nor is watcher, him not having a counter claim, something we rarely have happen anyway, shouldn't evoke additional trust.
I can't even remember us ever having a watcher role in play,
Beetnemesis - our current mod - as Santa Claus, Mafia 17.
Granted, I was dead when his role was revealed, so one out of 17 prior games?
if he'd claimed Tracker or something, yeah, I'd buy it, we've had those roughly half the games so no one wants to fake claim it, too risky, but Watcher? Just like Lie Detector, its so uncommon in the game series its safe, minimal risk of a counter-claim.
I view Watcher and Tracker as opposite halves of the same concept (which probably makes it unsurprising that the potential role in my last game included both) and while it has been seldom used in our games, I do not see it as a rare role. Add to that that Tracker is precisely the kind of fakeclaim that got severely burned (by Gher in the Mafia in Space game) and I do not view it as a safe claim.
You view watcher that way, and for the record I tend to view it as a slightly weaker twin myself, that's not the same as assuming beet or WF views it that way since based on distribution the tracker has come into play way more often and for the purpose of faked RCs, and to a lesser degree real ones, that's the more important matter. Similiar or not, if someone stuck a gun to my head and said 'which is more likely to be in the game, tracker or watcher?' I'd go with tracker, that's what matters. Your cited example of Gher getting burned by a tracker claim only reinforces that point.
Furthermore, the theme of this game suggests, to my inexperienced knowledge of the genre, a heavily roled game, and Watcher also seems like a very credible role for superheroes. About the Deadpool character in particular, I wouldn't know.
Right, and I do know, and I said I did, and I'm repeating that Deadpool as a Watcher makes about as much sense as Lan as a Doc, it's possible, but only by the same sort of stretch that could fit anyone to nearly anything that isn't totally against their character. I had to water down the inquisition on character matching role to make it safe for consumption but we've got 7 of 13 responders in so far, and all said 'yes', that they match.
Normally, you'd react to this like I did.
I'd be careful presuming you know how I'd react, you don't have as good a record as you might think in that regard.
Your track record for going easy on people under the finger of suspicion on Day 1 is as bad as me or DK's. I'm not claiming a knack for mind-reading, but I can gauge trends as well as anyone else. How often have you not voted for the person who was lynched on Day 1? When was the last time you strongly leaped to someone's defense on Day 1? Personally, I have trouble remembering when you've ever defended scummer allies, you tend to bus people, then there's the SK problem, they don't have allies, and it would be seem a bit strange for a Skrull to impersonate someone nobody likes or trusts, except under the 'person you'd most and thus least suspect' concept.
But I am curious to know why you think I reacted as I did if I do not believe what I'm writing. To defend White Flame? I feel like I've been more notable about bussing my allies when I was mafia than actually defending them, but maybe that's just my perspective. Especially given that your suggestion doesn't seem to have had any real popularity, White Flame is not at risk, why should I endanger myself to help him? But more importantly it makes no sense. You're accusing White Flame of being a serial killer, but also implying that I might be his teammate - that we are both mafia. And your argument for that is that my claim - that White Flame is not a serial killer - is suspicious. How does that work?
Actually, it makes a lot of sense if you were masoned together and didn't know he was a SK. But I didn't delve into the point because it merely revolves around your most major character pick being one of the most strongly involved major characters with his claim, and 'involved' is not 'allies', depending on the writers the two tend get along about as well a ice cream and a blow torch. I don't know what the score is with WF, let alone you, so I'm pointing out available data points as possible explanations for why you might be mounting what to me seems a very enthusiastic effort. Heck, for all I know your just digging your heels in because I'm the one who leveled the accusation. This all comes bakc to strange behavior, I didn't accuse you, an its not like I mince words on things like that, because I simply don't get why you jumped so strongly to his defense, it is, as you say yourself, very unlike you. You've admitted it would be abnormal for you to react to defend an ally, but your ticked because I'm calling this bizarre behavior from you?
If you are right that White Flame is a serial killer, then I am by necessity not aligned with him.
If you are right in implying that we are conspiring together, then you are de facto admitting that I am absolutely correct in claiming that White Flame is not mafia. And if you admit that I am right, then why are you suspicious of me again?
Because 'suspicious' in this case just means behavior with no obvious visible motivator. I've been known to, as a scummer, leap to townie's defenses for various reasons, partially just to give myself an excuse to do it in future games for allies without drawing suspicion. You really don't. If your a skrull, you might be wanting to defend him because he is too, that's possible, or because you want it remembered a townie died over your objection because if he turns out SK its no skin off your teeth, you can't be allied to a SK so it wouldn't draw suspicion. That makes sense, I'd do that. "Hey, I didn't think he was a SK, if I were scum, I'd want him dead whether I thought he was town or SK, so why defend him?" and if he turned out town "I'm known for voting for people on Day 1, so if I were scum, I wouldn't have had any motivation to not to vote for him or to defend him"... but that's just some options. You could have some piece of info your not telling us, like if you were wolverine, know for outing shapechangers by sense of smell, you might have started knowing "That's Wade Wilson all right, nobody smell's like that bastard" but not want to give away that ability or clue. I don't know what you're up to or why, but I think you're up to something, it could be pro-town for all I know.
Its seems weird to me that him claiming Watcher like this not only draws no extra suspicion on him from you, but does the exact opposite. The role doesn't fit the character, maybe that's the norm but I'd like to get some vocal support of that before I brush aside what seems in of itself to smell funky. I'm also noticing a very close connection between one of the major characters you claim and Deadpool. Seriously, what has he said that could possibly have just waved away your doubts? "Yes, I am as Isaac suspected a character best known for homicidal tendencies and an alignment of chaotic neutral, I, a bad ass killing machine who is generally considered utterly insane by everyone, including myself, happen to have an investigative role that everyone recognizes but is very rarely used" Seriously, how can you possibly have adopted a "Oh, okay, he must be innocent" attitude about this? You take as a given that a dangerously paranoid character known to kill first and ask questions never can not possibly be a SK but is instead a Watcher? If I had to pick roles to fit the mercenary-assassin Deadpool, it would be Survivor or Serial Killer, watcher? Not likely, I doubt our roles perfectly match our characters but until someone shows some evidence otherwise I expect them to at least seem logical, mine is. I mean listing Cyclops as a role I wouldn't pick 'mason' of the top of my head but 'mason with these other X-men' would make sense, etc. Note that while WF listed his RC, he didn't give some flavor fluff paraphrase of why he has this ability, like "The Mod gave me the SPLOG, and I'm the cop".
Well, obviously the validity of the character as associated to the role is something entirely different. I do believe I have stated my ignorance on the subject. So that did not actually influence my judgment. Though from what you say, and a look at the wiki for the character, what you say does indeed make sense. At the same time, trying to find what the character had been up to at the time of the Skrull invasion brought me here. It seems to imply that Deadpool was indeed fighting the Skrulls.
A real probability, he could be a townie, perosnally I'd have slated him for survivor or SK, maybe even mid-game activated SK, we've got plenty of precedent for that one. Deadpool's a classic belligerent anti-hero, how insane or amoral he is changes a lot from writer to writer, I wouldn't have been surprised by a vig claim for instance.
Seriously, which of these two scenarios makes more sense -
1. Beet assigned the role of watcher to a character it really doesn't fit
2. White Flame is a SK and didn't know his character selections would so blatantly out him as a SK, on getting hit with it decided he needs to pick a RC to survive the low lynch thresh-hold of day 1 and picks a well-known but rarely used investigative role.
Now, if we go forward with the 'does your character match your role?' questioning and a bunch of people say no, and it starts looking like Beet essentially randomly assigned major characters to pre-designed roles, then it might be a different story but I think we should be looking into that first.
Oh, most assuredly. I intend in no way to hinder most any investigative efforts, you will notice that my post doesn't even state that White Flame can't be a serial killer, it merely says three things:
1, I don't know that we have a serial killer and am leery of simply making that assumption,
I as well, it was just a lead I noticed, I recognized most major MArvel Characters and I think everyone is medium-major or bigger. I had a vague notion early in the game that a SK might out themselves on accident but it was real back-burner until I saw the list and it glared out at me, as a MArvel fan, if a very out of date one, it was like seeing a list of WoT heroes with "Asunawa" on it. Some people actually listed villians or non-Marvel Characters but but, again, it was sort of like seeing someone list "Asunawa, Padan Fain, some Saldaen PErrin talked to in LoC, and that guy who gave MAt and Rand a ride in his wagon in book 1" when you've got an inkling that someone with ruthless methods might be running around and you know yourself to be a character of at least Thom or Rhuarc levels of notoriety.
2, I find White Flame's roleclaim to be satisfactory and therefore don't see significant basis for lynching him,
3, I will not be voting for White Flame based on the current situation.
Incidentally, you should probably have realised by now that I've always been extremely suspicious of people trying to steer the town towards lynching scum other than the mafia. Not because they're necessarily wrong, but because they're typically mafia themselves. It was Fox and Ravens who tried to get the town hunting a hypothetical serial killer in the first crossover game, and he was mafia. It was you who started asserting the dual mafia groups in the second crossover game, and while you were correct, you were also mafia.
Yeah, I actually mentioned when I made the accusation that its obviously something a scummer would do too, so at the very least, you'd be accusing me as a probable scummer who knows very well that crusades against third parties draw eyes. In fairness, one game as a townie we did have a third party I didn't raise the option, but that was the Tower game and I doubted we'd have a third party with only 10 players and the SK got taken out on night 1. I also raised the option of a third party repeatedly last game, and I was town. I'm scum a lot, and I'm suspicious of third parties a lot, these things occasionally coincide, but keep in mind that other than as idle speculation I don't talk much about third parties on Day 1 and, we've only had about four games post game 6 they weren't in, I modded two of those and I got capped on night 1 of another of those, and your game 9 I was spending all my efforts trying to scheme in a two-week short game and convince people there were DFs. So its not really a fair accusation to level my way. I have raised it as a townie, but there's not a lot of cases for me to cite because there haven't been a lot of good reasons too, and again, I couldn't have 'done it on accident' since my original accusation on WF includes me discussing how a scummer would have a motivation to do it. That's me, like now, acknowledging that a dead SK will do nothing to improve my own trust levels and pointing out that whether I'm town or scummer I'm trustworthy on this matter and if anything, more trustworthy on the matter if a scummer, so people shouldn't waste the effort with a 'Never trust Isaac' line of reasoning on this one, because either way I'm on the level.
If I thought I had a good lead to share on the Skrulls, I would - I saw this, I consider eliminating a SK a good day 1 prize (trying to get a scummer on a team on day 1 is usually a losing proposition anyway) and I raised it. It's not like targeting for a SK or cultist is anti-town, they do as much damage as the classic scummer group does but early game can be taken out with one shot. The only reason we don't go after them with vigor is because they're smaller and hard to detect. Well, I saw a lead, the game is big enough for a SK, we've had plenty of them, and I've raised the SK and cult option many a time, I'm sure some of them I was a townie.
I was right about him being Deadpool, and as you've found out, this is not a bizarre claim for me to aim at him. Look at this from my perspective, town or DF I'd want a possible SK dead, and you basically come out and tell me "Yeah, he said he's Asunawa but he's a Watcher". I get it, you really don't know Marvel, so it doesn't seem as strange to you, but from my perspective, you're saying you don't think Asunawa is suspicious while having a Whitecloak prominently on your list. We may be ramping up to DefCon 1 on each other again without good reason. I admit I could be seeing shadows on you because I'm seeing your behavior as very suspicious in the context of my knowledge of MArvel and it doesn't fit very well since you don't know those comics, but surely you can see on explanation why both his character and his RC drew my eye and why your defense of him took my notice. We may not have a SK, just on historical odds the odds of us having one are a bit better than 50/50, they've been in way more non-early-days games then they've been absent. Since game 6 they've been in most games, and most of those that didn't have them had either the option for one to appear (both of the ones I modded) or a cult or third faction or some variation there of. So the odds favor it, and he's a very viable candidate for it, and he's produced what seems to me a very unlikely but 'safe' RC. I don't know if I'm right, but I think my logic train on this one is legit.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
