Yet these exercises in selective memory are far less puzzling than the current outrage over Elon and his DOGE employees. I can't wrap my mind around the fact that Democrats are having apoplexy over 20 something year old code savants using AI to uncover improper or unjustifiable expenditures, rather than the acknowledged fact that in the past 20 years our government has payed out 2.7 TRILLION dollars in improper payments!!! Oh, and that phrase, improper payments, comes from the GAO, not me.
If he was in a vetted position, say Sec of Treasury, and they had the required clearances.
From linked article: "According to legal experts, Musk and Trump’s actions are putting federal employees in a lose-lose situation. Trump’s executive order creating DOGE only gave Musk access to unclassified federal systems. Under Title V of the E-Government Act of 2002, it is a Class E felony carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for federal employees who have taken the oath of office to “willfully” disclose such information to any person or agency not entitled to receive it. "
Yes, those numbers are bad. But it is a reasonable position to be outraged that laws are being flaunted and federal employees sacked for attempting to follow the law, such as only allowing access to people cleared for it by someone with authority to do so, instead of the head of an advisory board.
