Can I have it both ways? damookster Send a noteboard - 12/04/2024 06:04:23 PM

Jesus what a total softball for Greg and Joe

Yes, devolving language bothers me in certain instances. That some dictionaries have given up and begun including "irregardless" infuriates me. Also, as mentioned before, I call bullshit on the so called explanation for misusing literally as an intentional form of hyperbole. Bah. Someone got called out for it and came up with that rather than simply admitting they made an error.

But others, not so much. I stole "umbraphile" from a NYT article, without realizing it's a portmanteau of Latin and Greek. Oops. Hardly unique though. Isn't automobile a portmanteau of Greek and French? Currently, Tacro and Cronut are examples combining different languages.

Interesting debate.

Umbraphile isn't a word - 08/04/2024 05:12:05 AM 127 Views
It is a word. It exists. - 08/04/2024 02:31:49 PM 117 Views
No it doesn't. Any retard can pretend a word exists but that doesn't make it so. *NM* - 08/04/2024 05:26:30 PM 56 Views
It does if enough people use it. That's how new words get created and enter a language. - 08/04/2024 05:32:46 PM 103 Views

I've long been confused by the 'literally' debate. - 12/04/2024 09:32:29 PM 102 Views
I think perhaps it comes down to intent and knowledge. - 12/04/2024 10:42:09 PM 121 Views
