First, they can’t and hence, they don’t.
Second, now you take the plot lines in new directions. What are the chances these new directions, as they play out, will be superior to the major plot choices made by the author who labored over his opus for thirty years? (See point one).
Conclusion: Edit, good. Rewrite, bad.
