How can you tell your ideology is off the rails? When Al Sharpton thinks you’re crazy.
1) If you lower the amount of cops who have guns for not every position needs a gun on them.
2) Better training.
3) If you have an amount of excessive force complaints, spousal abuse, and so on you are transferred to a different department without a gun, or you are kicked out of the police force (you can keep your partial pension.) Get a paper job if you are shown to use excessive force more often than warranted.
4) But most importantly systems of accountability where if there is a gun fired (even if no one is hurt) there is an investigation, and especially if someone is injured or killed. Said investigation would also have consequences such as if you are shown to be in error you are fired and can't have a job in any police department. None of this I resign during the investigation and then apply for a new job at a different jurisdiction with a "clean" record for the investigation was never finished and thus there isn't even an investigation being started on your record.
Police reform is possible, but it is a carrot and stick situation. Demanding defunding the police is the stick to show the local people in the local jurisdiction that they are tired of this stuff and thus they are taking up the issue with their city or county for cops are good but they only work when people have trust in the system.
(Likewise other social services without the use of a gun are also a net good for the local area and do things such as lowering crime and so on.)
But hey this is media, whether newspaper, tv, radio, and now internet nuance is something that is hard to covey in any of those mass mediums. Thus we have simple demands and simple understanding of all the stakeholders who are concerned about the safety of the community. We want it super simple and we do not want nuance in our super simple.
