And so begins week 5 of shelter at home, with no clear end in sight. damookster Send a noteboard - 13/04/2020 03:10:20 PM

Thursday March 11th was the last day we went to the office for work. The 12th was a "practice day." Everyone work from home to see if the network could manage. By the end of the day, it was mandatory until further notice. As it remains.

At first it was cool. Working all day long in my underwear. Setting up in bed if I wanted with laptop and mobile phone, beverages and snacks. It got old very quickly. Hibernating at home is fun when it is a choice. The novelty wears off in a hurry when you have none. Nor when you have no clue if and when things will return to "normal."

Will they return? What will be the new normal? Like so many offices, ours has reduced square footage per employee under the guise of increasing collaboration and interactions with others. How is that going to work out when we return to the office? Will there be enforced spacing? Will we all have to wear gloves and masks? Who decides?

We have been doing some things to try and maintain our sanity. Once a week we have a virtual happy hour where a bunch of us get on Zoom or Microsoft Teams and video chat while consuming our beverages of choice. It's amazing how much that limited contact helps.

But I think we are all eating and drinking too much while not getting anywhere near enough activity. Especially for those like me who live alone, it is difficult to motivate yourself to go for a walk or a run. I manage some days, but nowhere near enough.

I miss going out to eat. I miss going to the bar for a sandwich and a beer. I miss seeing my family. Going out for a drive in my Mustang is not as much fun when there is no possible destination.

How is everyone else surviving?

Current numbers for Connecticut: 12,035 confirmed cases, 554 deaths.
