It sounds like a pretty good movie, but it does show how pointless and crappy E8 was.

Looking forward to seeing it this weekend!

The point of The Last Jedi is failure, but that has always been Star Wars stories due to the Joseph Campbell influence, and via importing Joseph Campbell you are importing many of the "mystical" traditions. Mysticism being something at first glance is complete and utter nonsense (and it may still be nonsense after you understand it.)

The path to the grail, hero's journey, sufi hexad, whatever you want to call it will always have a path of movement that is not a straight line but instead the path of movement in the quest is toward and away from anything in our material world, to reach this spiritual plane you do not travel along a straight line but instead rather periods along the journey of striving, failing, and striving again…a rising and falling of energies along the path. Aka "tension" crap which is how most 3 act movies work in hollywood, the tension of rising and failing with 3 main acts in many movies but inside those 3 acts there are still a collections of minor risings and failings.

The point of the hero's journey and all movies that try to be mystical is the protagonists are not the same people after being forged by fire. The Last Jedi continued this theme...

Just like Empire did. You can find plenty of faults in The Last Jedi for they do exist. But think about it. For example Leia, The Purple hair Laura Dern character what is her name ...googles... Vice-Admiral Amilyn Holdo, and X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron. If these characters were characters from Empire who would they be?

???

The answer is Obi Wan, Yoda, and Luke for
Leia, Holdo, and Poe.

Poe is the brash fighter pilot who can't see true reality when he is on Dagobah, except Dagobah is Holdo's spaceship. Leia advices Holdo to train Poe but Holdo will not have it for Poe is reckless, brash, arrogant, and does not see how his emotions cloud his actions and thus put everything at risk. Of course Holdo like Yoda is no saint, but they both sized up the next generation correctly, and the only way the next generation is to grow is them slowing down and listening or for them to encounter failure.

And since this is The Heroes Journey and this is the midpoint of the trilogy then failure it is.

But everyone hates the Holdo and Poe arc for it is not fun and it feels way too personal. A puppet gremlin who is mischievous and then dresses down the young idealistic good looking hero, while a woman who has authority that does this to her underling, well people do not like that when women tell men to behave even if its warranted for men do not like to hear negative things from women even if they goddamn need too.

And you can do the same thing for the rest of The Last Jedi, there are similar character arcs for all the characters such as Rey and Luke, and Finn plus Rose.

So remind me Anonymous2000 what made The Last Jedi pointless and crappy?
