Failed nominations is about the party; losing candidates is about the US Cannoli Send a noteboard - 23/11/2019 12:02:33 PM

This is, of course, taking only the nominee of a party into consideration and taking Toni Morrison's assertion that Bill Clinton was the "first black President" at face value. Otherwise there are lots of failed black candidates - Jesse Jackson, Ben Carson, Herman Cain, Alan Keyes etc., though there are more Catholics too (Biden, Eugene McCarthy, Ted Kennedy, Pat Buchanan, Rubio, Jeb!, Rudy Giuliani, Alan Keyes (a twofor!!! - he's also black), Santorum, Chris Christie, etc.).

That is fairly illustrative of something, I think. I notice that all three of the Catholic nominees were Democrats. Kind of funny how so many people claim the Christian/evangelical types dominate the GOP and yet were surprised that the supposed best candidates were overtaken by a maniac like Trump. When all the other choices are known Catholics or have Catholic-sounding names like "Fiorina" or "Cruz"...I guess your choices are basically Rand Paul or Trump. And Paul probably couldn't be convinced to turn our defense budget over to the Knesset for approval. It would appear the evangelical wing of the GOP, despite supposedly being the real conservative force of the party, would prefer Trump's sexual morality, Romney's socialist trailblazing and McCain's being a leftist who openly despised them whenever his name was not on a ballot, to a papist who's hardcore on the values that are important to them, because what is adherence to a 2000 year tradition in support of said values. You don't like Muslims in Jerusalem? Tell me again about all the Protestant military efforts to drive them out. You don't like witchcraft and satanism in Harry Potter? We had an actual inquisition for that stuff! You like the Bible? Whom do you think wrote it? You don't like sex and dancing? We've got monasteries and convents! You don't like God being taken out of schools? If you send your kids to Catholic schools, and start writing checks, the dioceses will probably be convinced to slow down their current easing Him out. You don't like the gays? We're the only ones who are still allowed to be shamed for that stuff! I know they're worried about Jesuit plots to control the country, but look how long it took them to get their hands on the papacy!
