Well, the latter is fine but the former... Who invites someone who "had behaved like an asshole towards" their brother (my sister's own words a few days ago) to a birthday party? At least if they expect the brother to show up?

Next weekend, my sister turns 30. Now she is disappointed because I haven't made sure the kids are with me this weekend (I didn't get a proper invitation to her celebration until this week). So she wants me to go pick up the kids from the ex so they can come to her party. I said I thought this was a bad idea, since their lives are messy enough as it is, and don't want to add more of this. She had a hard time accepting that, and this took a bunch of energy to sort out.

I will send her an email tomorrow about how disappointed I am that she doesn't trust my judgment re: the kids. They get uncertain of what will happen when both of their parents are in the same room, so for their sake I will skip the party.
I will tell you, my family is not used to me standing up like this.
