The issue people have is not that Daenerys' actions are unfathomable given the trajectory of her character arc. It's that it would take at least a season of actual character development outside of "oh no Missandei" to make her actions believable.

I thought that her moral event horizon would be going to the Red Keep and annihilating it, killing soldiers and sheltered civilians alike. I didn't think that it would be her systematically purging the streets of peasants.
