I have defended Sanderson in the past because I don't think Robert Jordan was an incredibly great writer, style-wise, and because stepping into his shoes to finish a series is hard. He can't be expected to always get the tone right for every character, etc.
However, you are absolutely correct in your criticism. That was just awful writing.
