I just lost 36 pounds to get back to my college fighting weight! I'm 6'8" and got up to 269, yikes, after hovering in the 250's for years, which was okay. But my wife did a calorie counting app to lost 18 pounds to get back to her college weight and I got motivated to do the same. I didn't do an app, but used the same strategy:
Just eat less, or more accurately, minimize calories
That's it. I lost those 36 pounds in about 3 months, now down to 233. And the biggest surprise to me was how easy it was to do. After a few days, your body gets use to the amount of food you are eating and it becomes normal. I can't imagine eating what I use to eat.
Love to hear about your strategy and those of other posters!
