Yeah. But that's not really an analog Cannoli Send a noteboard - 06/11/2018 11:05:38 PM

I have no idea what a born again Catholic is supposed to be.

Isn't there such a thing as a Charismatic Catholic? IIRC, I met someone years ago who identified as such.

Charismatic Catholics seem to emphasize the manifestations of divine power and grace, with such phenomena as speaking in tongues and prophecy. I had a high school teacher who was into that stuff, but I paid more attention to his theology, which was as typically watered down as most modern mainstream Catholicism. I don't know that they're specifically heretical, but they seem a little 'reverently irreverent'. Maybe presumptuous in their affection for God? There are the Gifts of the Holy Ghost, which are traditionally virtues and qualities that you get to enhance your or others' faith, but the charismatics have their own list of Gifts, taken from St Paul's list from 1 Corinthians.

As I understand born-againers they're like, super enthusiastic and hard to tell externally from Fundamentalists or Evangelicals. I only know those are different because in a NY Times article, they characterized this group of scientists as fundamentalist Christians, and their correction later on said "No, our mistake, they're Evangelicals and Catholics." Now, from my PoV, the literal meaning of a fundamentalist Christian is someone who practices or believes fundamental Christianity, which would not necessarily exclude Catholics, but would actually consist only and entirely of Catholics, because I don't really see anyone else as Christian. How can you follow Christ, but not His vicar on Earth, or the successors to His Apostles? I mean, I believe in baptism, to the degree that other Catholics give me the side eye. I believe in the Evangelists, and accept their writings as the Word of God and I took an Evangelist(Luke)'s name at my Confirmation. I believe in, and respect the authority of priests and bishops. But I am not a Baptist, Evangelical Christian, Presbyterian or Episcopalian. I follow the orthodox teachings of the Church and live in the extreme eastern of the important part of the world, but I'm not Eastern Orthodox. By my understanding of what the terms mean, and my religion, I am born again.

So, I don't know where I rank according to other people's view of the religious/Christian spectrum, because I'm not super interested in learning the details of other belief systems beyond what I need to know not to be assholes to them.
