Granted, it is more than difficult to make a guess at the motivations of someone never met, but do you think the words/phrases are used unknowingly? There's also the possibility that it is said in a more strategic and thoughtful manner, because there is the belief that it would hurt/enrage "the other side" more than just a general slur?
Racial and misogynistic slurs tend to be the only thing in today's day and age where someone can say it, and it catches everyone's attention. Other labels/words are tossed around with such frequency that it doesn't even register anymore. Someone can call someone a Nazi...doesn't even catch someone's attention. But degrade someone in a manner in which you think they would find offense (casual homophobic slur)....that very well may score a hit.
More interesting is that I see it far more in one direction...
