So again with the incindeary dialogue... Jeordam Send a noteboard - 12/12/2017 10:52:50 PM

Let's put some misconceptions to rest, shall we?

I vote Republican.
I'm not white.

My family wasn't even here during Civil War era. They were still in Mexico. So my family never owned any slaves.... There is no "systematic" set of family racism. Any racism is a product of the individual, and not the upbringing. I come from a family of strong women. My grandmother was very adamant that her daughters (one of which was my mother) finish High School. She was also very strict when it came to treating her sons and daughters equally. My grandpa was somewhat "old school" and had a curfew for his daughters which was several hours before his sons (in the guise of them being safe). My grandmother overruled him on that....if the boys can stay out until 10, so can the girls. And that was that. As for poor.....my family started out that way. I was poor when I was growing up. I have no "family vacations" memories. Those were going to grandma & grandpa's house out in the country. I didn't have all the nice toys that kids had (when they had transformers...I had go bots).

Do you see what I'm getting at? My very personal experiences fly right in the face of the very thing you are assuming.

As for having a dialogue with a "White Supremacist"....I would very much have a dialogue with them. Talking to that person does not validate what they say. Talking to them does not legitimize what they say. Instead, maybe I could try and understand why they believe the way that I can do. Through knowing their story, knowing the person behind the hate...maybe, just maybe...I can help them see beyond the hate. Being shown compassion and having someone listen go a long way to someone changing their viewpoints.

No amount of me yelling, disregarding, ignoring, or belittling someone is going to make them change. Instead, I'm trying the opposite pathway...not validating or legitimizing their viewpoints. Just listening & trying to understand.
