I know a lot of EU and UN'ers are freaking out, but moving the US embassy to the capital of Israel doesn't seem like a big deal.
Thoughts?
First - I support a two state solution as the beginning of the end of the problem of the Palestinians lacking a state. Secondly, the Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be their capital. I am not sure how having a divided city will benefit anyone though.
Either way, when one side wants something, and you are both in the midst of negotiations, then it's a bad idea to increase the contention between the two parties.
The law itself about moving the Embassy to Jerusalem was passed in 1995. But every President since then - Clinton, Bush, and Obama, have deferred the move. Until now. Trump is doing this for his base - evangelicals mainly. Otherwise it serves no true purpose. Yes, Israel states Jerusalem is its capital. Fine. But we don't need to recognize it. And I worry that this will just cause even more tensions in the region.
Definitely a bad idea. I think the costs outweigh the benefits. I wonder if Trump's team did a cost-benefit analysis. I'd be curious to see how they weighed the variables.
