It was basically a prank promulgated over the internet with the stated intention of seeing what the reaction would be, especially that of the media. And of course, there was. A lot of the notes were posted at schools and on campuses, and administrators and officials issued statements more appropriate to Nazi or Klan symbols, and we got media interviews of non-white students moaning about how this makes them feel unwelcome. Basically, exactly what the pranksters intended to provoke.
