Doesn't sound too good. I peeked at it for 15 mins before the wife came down on Sunday (we are currently watching Freeks and Geeks), but it seemed a poor representation of ST.
Thoughts?
Star Trek Discovery first 2 episodes were pretty boring, lead is made of cardboard ("Vulcan trained" and the rest was fairly generic sci-fi stuff. It felt like a good 1/3 of the first 2 episodes were in klingon with subtitles which isn't a very pleasant sounding language. The 3rd episode was better, but still had some annoying cast members added which include the plucky and excitable Cadet, the gruff/angry lead Scientist and the morally ambiguous Captain. An alien chase that felt more Mass Effect than Star Trek. They even included the super hero jump/landing...
But have you heard of the Orville? Its a Seth Macfarlane sci-fi trek rip off. Originally I assumed like alot of people it was going to be Family Guy in Space, but it is actually more like a star trek tribute but with more natural dialogue.
In its first 4 episodes they have already hit alot of the typical sci-fi tropes (Derelict super ship, keeping new tech that could be weaponized away from a species not part of the Union/Federation, kidnapping people for alien zoos, alien social misunderstandings) as well as alot of the more SJW type stuff (Transgender, Nature vs Nurture, Gener inequality, Religious leader keeping citizens in the dark for control).
If I had to compare them I'd say Star Trek Discovery is a generic sci fi with the Trek branding and the Orville is Trek-lite with generic branding.
I'll probably continue to watch both, but I'm enjoying the Orville alot more than ST.
