I can't help but think a children's series is the wrong venue for this sort of protest. Ghavrel Send a noteboard - 26/06/2017 05:52:52 PM

I think there's real value in stories of real and obvious good vs. real and obvious evil, because the world is precisely as complex as you said. And sure, in reality we probably shouldn't engage in the deeply personal attacks I'm making against fictional characters here, and we should focus simply on the morality of actions instead.

But I think a rejection of black and white at the very least has the potential to lead people towards moral and cultural relativism (I recognize that you are not arguing for moral or cultural relativism here), and I'm really tired of milquetoast liberals refusing to condemn barbaric practices abroad for whatever reason du jour is currently in vogue.

"We feel safe when we read what we recognise, what does not challenge our way of thinking.... a steady acceptance of pre-arranged patterns leads to the inability to question what we are told."

I think it's more because people are rejecting facile black-and-white depictions of the world. - 26/06/2017 02:27:21 PM 640 Views
