Wush, the point that Roland00 Made went right over Random Thoughts head Roland00 Send a noteboard - 21/06/2017 11:56:41 PM

What is freedom of speech? I am not being pedantic, but define it please Random Thoughts.

Why I want us to define our terms, because there are multiple definitions of the concept of Freedom of Speech since Gutenberg (and even prior to Gutenberg.)

The US Constitution's 1st Amendment Freedom of Speech is about Federal Government Action, not corporations, not individuals, not state governments, not local governments. Note this was changed in the 14th amendment.

Before the 1st amendment (1791) there was the French Declaration of the Rights of Man (1789) which had a different idea of freedom of speech (you could be punished due to your speech). This is different than the Freedom of Speech on the UK Parliament floor of 1689.

Here is a brief primer, but in reality this timeline is very basic.

Furthermore Freedom of Speech is separate from Freedom of Thought and Freedom of Press even though they are very related.

----------

It is very rude to say just because you do not support my style of Freedom of Speech I will now make this comment Then you really don't understand freedom of speech (I am not making this comment, I am repeating your very words Random Thoughts). Extremely rude, creating a strawman, and no true scotsman argument, but most importantly extremely rude..

And it is flat out false too. I am willing to bet you a $100 Gavrel can school you on the arguments for the various forms of Freedom of Speech and the pros and cons (pros and cons both for the individual and for society overall) for each style.

Corporations have nothing to do with Freedom of Speech with most forms of Freedom of Speech. Saying I can't organize a boycott is restricting other freedoms such as freedom of thought, freedom of act, freedom to organize, and so on. Saying I can't organize a boycott is restricting my ability to share information with other people, it is thought police.

But the real point of this post. Can you stop being an asshole Random Thoughts and treat a person with differing opinions than you civilly, or do you get off on being a rude asshole calling people snowflakes and creating strawmans?

As soon as you start calling people snowflakes you enter the uncivil bad faith style of argument, the same type of bad faith where people can start questioning your morality, your parenting abilities, makes jokes about your mother, your kids, etc.

So stop being a rude asshole Random Thoughts, please. But if you disagree and want to keep up this rude speech, I still think you have the right and freedom to be a rude asshole.
