For all of you in MMO land that say you're going to "Roll a new character", I just want to say this: Screw you.

I die a little inside every time you jerks say that. If you want to roll up a character then get out of the basement, get some friends together and F*#$ING PLAY D&D;!

It's interesting to see the old AD&D/White Wolf dichotomy play itself out again with the online community, the hack 'n slash crowd vs. the "pure" roleplayers, jocks vs. drama geeks or whatever. I was always a bit annoyed by the D&D groups where the most important player talent was min/maxing, but FAR more annoyed by White Wolves whole "dice are optional in the Storyteller system" thing. Now we have multiple entire "roleplaying" communities consisting of no more than kill, loot, level and repeat, like Moria or Nethack with 3D graphics. On the other hand, I've seen "roleplay" forums where Mods actually have to tell people not to have their characters do omnipotent, gamebreaking MUNCHKIN crap, especially to OTHER PCS!

The sad thing is, modern PCs offered the potential to make true gaming a LOT better by placing all the mechanics on which DMs and players spent a LOT of time in the hands of machines so the people could just... play. Instead of getting that renaissance, my impression, admittedly from a great distance, is that 90% of it is still a choice between "gaming" approaching the level of an arcade and people who think lots of emotes and verbiage is roleplaying.

Anyway, sorry for the little subrant, but, yeah, I hear ya, man. Gimme a PH, a dicetube and a good ol' fashioned dungeon crawl over all this CGI garbage any day of the week and twice on Sunday. :|

Welcome to the evolution of language.
Anachronism isn't terribly evolved.

If you're rolling dice, you may be rolling a new character, but if you're just whirring your CPU, you may be generating a character, but you aren't ROLLING one.
